Updating the Target URL of a URL Object in CONTENTdm

Symptom

  • The target URL of a URL object in CONTENTdm has changed and needs to be updated

Applies to

  • CONTENTdm

Resolution

Unlike other hosted files in CONTENTdm, URL objects link out to an external resource. CONTENTdm still uses a hosted file to surface the link on the end-user website, but replacing the target URL requires using the Replace Single Items in a Collection or Replace Multiple Items in a Collection function in the Project Client.

To begin, a new file or files with the target URL(s) should be created. The files are hosted with a #.url naming convention and the name of the replacement file needs to match exactly the name of the hosted file for the record. The CONTENTdm file name displays as an Administrative Field in the object record metadata. The contents of the replacement file should consist only of the following:

[InternetShortcut]
URL=https://targetURLhere.com

NOTE: https://targetURLhere.com should be replaced with the new intended target URL to be hosted on CONTENTdm.

Once the items are replaced, upload the edits, approve, and index as normal.
